Burn ICU Volunteer

What I liked

I loved getting to know the staff and feeling as though I was having a direct impact on my community.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a better idea of tasks that needed to be done because a lot of the time I was just searching for something that I could do.

Advice

Be open to the experience and understand that you are meeting people when they are at their worst so be nice and always understanding. The staff is truly amazing so do not be afraid to make connections.

This position was very unique since URA's were not previously seen in the ICU. This gave us more autonomy than standard volunteers. The downtime during research gave us the opportunity to do personal projects.

Biology Research Intern

What I liked

It was a good experience where I got to apply my classroom learning to some real world research and actually make a difference. I gained a lot of hands-on skills I would have never gotten otherwise, and learned both about biology and about my own preferences and talents.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more guidance in the lab and instruction, as it was very intimidating joining the lab as a freshman and being given independence and little mentorship. It was a rewarding experience, but I should have waited and found a lab that was more fitting toward my interests and skillsets.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help. There are plenty of resources out there and although the tasks you are doing now might seem impossible or far out of your reach, you are very capable with some help. Most importantly, communicate! Talk to your friends, your professors, your lab manager, and they will be able to help guide you through many issues.

Phage Therapy Center Developer

What I liked

I live and breathe phage therapy. I want it to become the standard of medicine to either replace by or be used in synergism with antibiotics. The doctors at the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH) are going to save the AMR world.

What I wish was different

I was not given very much direction, which I actually loved. For others, though, I can see how an internship and its tasks being arbitrary might be difficult.

Advice

There are so many pieces of advice I could give, but when it comes to housing, get somewhere nice (not student housing) and inexpensive, which is hard to find in La Jolla. Go to the beach at least once a week!
