UCSB Conference & Hospitality Services

Guest Service Representative (GSR)

June - September 2019 • Santa Barbara, CA

What I liked

The job allows you to meet a great group of people, ranging from students to guest who stay at the resident halls. The job has helped me grow by offering different opportunities to grow within the job; they offer positions as a GSR, senior GSR, and manager in training. Scheduling is flexible and can change weekly if needed (I was able to take classes and work at the same time).

What I wish was different

You should be okay with working grave shifts, its not too bad, and you usually get 0-1 grave shifts a week, but it can get boring (which is where the great co-workers come in handy).

Advice

I've had a great time this summer and look forward to coming back, if you're going to be in UCSB for the summer it's a great option if you're looking to save up and have a job with flexible hours.

Guest Service Manager

March - September 2019 • Santa Barbara, CA

What I liked

This position allowed me to grow and develop thoroughly! I was able to work in an environment with kind, like-minded professionals who were willing to lend help wherever necessary. I enjoyed being able to train with a large diverse staff on topics that have shaped both my personal and professional life.

What I wish was different

I was in a position where my previous summer had not been in the same location as I was managing. However, I was able to quickly manage and learn all of the idiosyncratic tendencies of the job while at work. It would have been a little quicker to problem solve if I knew the layout by experience, but the experience I learned on the job made it all work out in the end and I am happy I was an asset to the team as a fresh set of eyes.

Advice

Take this opportunity. Whether it be as a Guest Service Representative or as a Guest Service Manager, the Conference & Hospitality Services has been nothing short of a professional family who has worked hard to ensure I was confident and comfortable in my position. I have learned so much from the time I spent here and have gained so much life experience that will be utilized in future years. Definitely my favorite job thus far.

Guest Services Representative

June - September 2018 • Goleta, CA

What I liked

We received extensive training and my managers were extremely accessible to my coworkers and I. Everyone I worked with directly was friendly and helpful.

What I wish was different

It was difficult to make plans with friends or participate in extracurriculars because the times of shifts were different each week. Sometimes conference guests were unpleasant.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Your managers and coworkers are happy to offer advice that will strengthen your customer service skills.
