Student Coordinator

January - September 2018 • Goleta, CA

What I liked

It afforded me the opportunity to gain valuable skills in supervision, public speaking, and collaboration across departments at the university, in both student and academic affairs. This position also fostered professional development through close relationships with professional staff within our office.

What I wish was different

That this position would have included more planning alongside our Directors for our summer program to gain experience with managing the planning steps of a large program and not just implementation.

Advice

I would advise that future student coordinators use the opportunities afforded to you in this position to meet and build connections and professional relationships with all the staff across campus that you begin to interact with from the start of the job.

Orientation Staff Leader

March - August 2018 • Santa Barbara, CA

What I liked

During the summer, I enjoyed creating supportive and encouraging friendships among my Orientation staff members. Being strangers during the interview process, these individuals grew to be the best friends and leaders on the UCSB campus. They were teammates who were willing to work hard, empathize with others, and push themselves as well as others to be the best they can be. Through the internship, I was able to grow alongside these individuals through the challenges and learning experiences we had. Another aspect I enjoyed about working on Orientation staff was the amount of self-awareness I developed over the course of the summer. I felt I was able to learn more about myself as a person as well as understand how to best work with others, which I found was most valuable.

What I wish was different

N/A

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is to always keep an open mind. This internship is very rewarding, but there are many challenges that you may face on any day during the job. Be sure to ask questions if you need help. Reach out to those you have not met. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn. Your staff members are there to support you in every obstacle you may face! Lastly, enjoy every minute that you have of it, because the summer will pass quicker than you think.
