Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2023 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed working in a research environment. There was a ton of fun and interesting work that needed to be done that I was able to do or learn how to do. I expanded my general engineering abilities, ranging from CAD, programming, and presenting. I worked on base and spent a decent amount of time in the lab.

What I wish was different

I would have like to work in a field closer to what I am learning in school. The project I was assigned too, there was not much to do with electrical engineering so I filled the niche of generic engineering- opposed to more specific tasks that would fall under my major. I also would have liked to be able to see the project work in a more practical fashion opposed to more abstract theoretical hypotheses. Getting trained on all of the machines that I would need to use also took a very long time, but that may have just been a base thing.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and try something new, you can learn something important from everything, even if something breaks. Learning is the one thing we will never stop doing and is always worth finding a way to learn and understand something no matter how silly or simple it may seem at first. Also just because something may not be exactly what you are interested in doesn't mean its not interesting or worth doing. If anything those are the places/things that make you learn the most.
