Uinta Academy

Family teacher

June - August 2019 • Wellsville, UT

What I liked

Uinta academy is a residential treatment center for troubled teen girls. I like that this job allowed you to work closely with the girls and develop leadership skills, personally. Very fast paced.

What I wish was different

This job can be really stressful as you are usually on your own with multiple girls. You need to be quick on your feet and assertive. It was also hard because each group was always understaffed.

Advice

if You are interested in social work or psychology, this is the place for you! Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere for a job more suited for your interests.

Youth Counselor

March - August 2019 • Wellsville, UT

What I liked

I learned so much about myself and about what a career in the mental health industry would be like. I got free food while on shift and I got to be very close with many of my co-workers. I enjoyed the summer horseback rides and being involved in the clients lives.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more support for staff, seeing as the position was very new to us and the job was very difficult. There was often occasions where I was overwhelmed and couldn't monitor all the girls assigned to me by myself, but I was left alone and that was extremely difficult mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically.

Advice

This job is not for everyone. The people you are working with (the clients) are not often kind, and it can be very difficult to enjoy the work your doing. You must be grounded, happy, and functional in your personal life before considering this position.
