DC Operations Management Intern

June - August 2022 • Chambersburg, PA

What I liked

I liked how much effort Ulta put in to not just their interview and selection process, but the entirety of the internship. I truly felt like I was valued as an intern, and my mentors and managers went out of their way to provide me with support, resources, and connections throughout. I felt that my skills and experience were acknowledged and respected, and I was properly challenged in my role based on that. The corporate culture and distribution center culture overlap significantly, and it was a good culture to be a part of in my opinion - they really value people at every level of their business, from consumers to distribution center associates to retail workers to corporate employees, which is refreshing to see. Overall, I learned an insane amount in such a short time, the vast majority of which will be directly applicable to my career in some way or another. I would absolutely make the same decision again if I could!

What I wish was different

Almost any distribution center runs on a 24-hour schedule 6 or 7 days a week, so being on first shift meant being at work at 5:30am. But, they provided summer housing for us that was about a 10 minute drive away making mornings much easier, and in the end it was earlier than I prefer but it wasn't a difficult adjustment and well worth it. The last thing is something that just comes with experience, but I wish they had a better new-grad hiring program after the internship ends. There isn't a direct path from intern to job offer, especially since they don't hire for positions until 2-3 months before the opening. The program is still pretty new so they're constantly making improvements, but it's run by passionate people who really do want to provide a great experience for their interns (the program is relatively small, ~20-30 students countrywide) and any feedback you give them is taken to heart. It's a great program, and only getting better, and I can't think of anything major that significantly impacted my experience in a negative way - these are all little things that weren't important in the grand scheme of things but I wanted to share so people had a better idea of the structure.

Advice

Go into this with ambition and an open mind - it's an incredible experience regardless, but you can really shape it how you want just based on how much you take advantage of the opportunities you have. Reach out to people throughout the organization to set up meet and greets and networking chats; participate in the "team building" and other group activities; take notes on conversations you have with people, particularly when you get little nuggets of advice that will come in handy later or help clarify your career goals. One of the great things about this internship program is the range of people you'll meet and the sheer opportunities you have while there - nearly anything is yours for the taking, and you're there to learn so you might as well learn as much as you can!

What I liked

The discounts.

What I wish was different

They don’t value their employees unless you make them money. The tasking team does a lot of the grunt work in order to make the store look nice and keep it fully stocked but they aren’t ever rewarded, only the sales girls are rewarded. This company promotes employees getting gratis (Free product) but again unless you can make this company money by selling product, credit cards or rewards then you’re seen as invaluable and will only ever receive the gratis that others don’t want. There isn’t room for growth as they are always bringing in outside people to manage their stores. Their pay is also extremely far from being competitive.

Advice

Stick up for yourself. Don’t allow this company to walk all over you and know your worth as a worker.

What I liked

I have enjoyed being able to talk to a variety of people, assessing and helping their individual needs, learning about new products, and seeing the ins and outs of running a business.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have started working a little bit earlier and possibly applied for a different position. I have enjoyed the few bits of facing I get to do and think I would enjoy stocking as well as being a beauty advisor.

Advice

Be comfortable with trying things that are unexpected. Coming into this job, I had no prior experience as a cashier. It took a bit of a learning curve balancing working the cash register as well as providing quality service to patrons. I had to learn very quickly to just being comfortable in this place of unknowing for a while and ask questions.
