Don't be afraid to ask for help and advocate for yourself! This is designed to be a learning experience more than anything else.

Student Intern

June - August 2019 • Wilmington, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands-on learning experience of working in public relations. I got to write news articles for UNCW's homepage, individual profiles for the WE ARE UNCW pages that highlighted notable faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members, and I got to work with the editorial team to improve my writing and polish the writing I published with OUR

What I wish was different

Since it was the summer, there weren't as many opportunities to write or work on projects as I would have liked.

Advice

Be proactive. You'll have assignments, but the staff also wants you to incorporate ideas. Take the opportunity. Also, don't forget to network with the staff and stay in touch after the internship. I ended up getting a commission because someone at work knew someone else who wrote for a local magazine.

Writing intern

May - August 2018 • Wilmington, NC

What I liked

I liked getting to write real articles that were published on the UNCW.edu homepage. It was very rewarding.

What I wish was different

I think that during the summer, the amount of news on a college campus slows down. For that reason, I think I had less assignments than I would have if I interned during the fall or spring semester.

Advice

A piece of advice I would share is to any writing intern is to make sure you are flexible with your schedule. Interviewing people means you have to work around another person's schedule, so you need to be patience and respectful of their time as well.

Communications Intern

May - August 2018 • Wilmington, NC

What I liked

The professionalism of the staff combined with the dedication to uphold UNCW brand to its highest possible standard. I loved telling stories from Seahawks around campus through WE ARE UNCW profiles.

What I wish was different

I wish I had networked more with people in the office. Everyone is talented, but I never got much face-to-face time with them.

Advice

Take advantage of every minute you're in the building. Don't be afraid to ask people questions and accept the feedback. They have the professional and personal experience to guide you to places you want to go.
