Being on Capitol Hill! Nowhere else can you run into senators daily.

Legislative Assistant
September - December 2017 • Washington, DC
What I liked
As Senator Schumer is the minority leader, the internship has a lot of options for where you want to work and what you want to do. While the personal office (the typical internship experience in Congress) is an option, you can also explore other committees that may focus more on research, events and outreach, or media. This internship gives you a lot of choices.
What I wish was different
The internship is not paid and does not provide for a travel stipend.
Advice
Start applying early as many, more competitive internships have very early application deadlines. Also, apply for grants such as the KACIF grant. Most internships are not paid and these resources makes having an internship slightly less financially cumbersome.

Intern for US Senator Charles Schumer
June - August 2018 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
Two days a week, 4 hours a day. Answering constituent calls was really interesting and I learned a lot.
What I wish was different
It was unpaid, which does not allow students of a lower socioeconomic status to participate because they can’t afford to work for free.
Advice
Listen to the people calling. They are really passionate about what they are calling about, so listen to them and learn from them.
