Universal Music Group

Marketing Intern

June - August 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the environment of the office and the people in it. Everyone was open to teaching me, talking to me, and learning about me. They also hosted countless fun events.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to find housing. I got hired late in the spring and rent in NYC has been out of control recently.

Advice

Make sure you use your time to network. Most of the time, the work you do as an intern can be learned quickly and is good experience. Doing this work well and in a timely manner is important, but building a good network is invaluable. Not only did I learn more from seeking out meetings, but I feel more secure in my path going forward.

What I liked

The work I was given was hands on and every day was different.

What I wish was different

Advice

Working at a record label can be very overwhelming, but it's what you make of it. Take every opportunity you can to reach out to individuals in other departments and learn more about their jobs! That was one of the best decisions I made during my time at UMGN.

Working in a fast-paced environment, on some of the largest album and song releases in the world.

What I wish was different

Having a slightly more structured overarching internship program.

If you get your foot in the door, as it is extremely difficult, make friends with everyone and really put yourself out there as it can (and will) lead to many more opportunities.

Marketing and Artist Development Intern

August 2017 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I really like the environment here. They all really encourage you to be better and always want you to ask them questions! They also welcome feedback and new ideas from interns, which is great because it allows you to be more innovative with your ideas and projects. Each student also gets a project during the course of the internship program and during this project you get to speak with all the managers in your department one-on-one and they give you great feedback and tips and you can ask more questions.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

I would say to always prepare as best as you can before and during your internship. Make sure you look and memorize their artist roster and know what is each artist currently up to. Did they just release a new single? Are they on tour? Are they in the process of making a new album or promoting a new album? It's extremely important to know where everyone is at so when your bosses or someone in the company wants to discuss a project regarding an artist, then you know 1) who they are 2) what is going on right now, which will ultimately allow you to contribute more effectively as an intern.
