Student Orientation Leader

May - September 2020 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed being a representative of the Unversity of Cinncinati. I enjoyed welcoming new students to the university. I learned more than I had ever known about my own university which is so helpful when talking to other students and parents. I worked with such a diverse and inclusive team along the way. It was a great time as a Student Orientation Leader (SOL) even with the circumstances due to the pandemic.

What I wish was different

I wish that we could have been able to do orientations in-person as in the previous years. However, we kept a positive outlook on the things as they came. I grew as a professional by becoming a SOL and learned more about myself during this past summer.

Advice

If this opportunity is available for students, I would encourage everyone to take advantage of it. Becoming a SOL has taught me so much about my university and the available resources that are offered here for students. This is a great experience overall and you will regret it in the long run.

What I wish was different

Sometimes it felt as though we were running in circles because it was hard to move things along all online. Trying to contact people get pieces moving was hard at times.

Communication Intern

June - July 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

As an International Business and Marketing double major, I thought it was extremely valuable that I was able to help UC International's office this Summer with marketing efforts for a major event they were planning in November. It included a range of tasks such as event planning, organizational communication, and content creation. Besides the skills gained relating to marketing, perhaps the best part of this internship was who I was able to work with. Initially, this internship was created for an internship experience for students from our partner universities, but UC has always had at least one spot open for a heavily involved student from UC. This past Summer, I was one of two UC students who served as an ambassador not only to UC, but to the city of Cincinnati for all five international interns coming to this city for the first time.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would've changed is increasing the amount of interaction we got to have with other UC students and international students visiting over the summer. Every time we had a chance to go into the city and experience something together as a team, we felt inspired and that directly translated into our work. I know if we were to have more team bonding we would've gotten some tasks done a lot faster with a bit more creativity.

Advice

Be open minded. I understand that this job isn't for everyone. This job requires you to work with students with vastly different backgrounds than yourself. A part of this job that isn't in the description is being able to create a connection between yourself and five other interns that might not have ever been to the US before. You should be able represent what it means to be a bearcat and an ambassador to the department.
