University of Illinois

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Champaign, IL

What I liked

The opportunity to conduct research at a top notch facility. With massive funding. I was able to receive mentoring from a highly accredited professor. I was granted my own office space and computer to use in my research, and while most of my day was spent working independently, there was still time to collaborate with my advisor and graduate students.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would wish was that some more info on my project was sent prior to my arrival. I had to spend the first 2 weeks getting up to speed, when all of that could've been done remotely prior to my arrival.

Advice

I would encourage students to seek opportunities such as REU programs. You can travel to another university at their expense, live on campus at their expense, and receive a stipend. Search for opportunities like this because getting yourself into an environment you are unfamiliar and perhaps uncomfortable in is what promotes you to grow as an individual.

Student Athletic Training Aid

June - August 2019 • Champaign, IL

What I liked

This job gave me a look into what sports teams do behind the scenes and get a better idea of what the Athletic Trainers do. This also gave me a better idea of what I may want to pursue as a career in the future.

What I wish was different

I would have liked just slightly more communication. Sometimes I was left in the dark about some things but it all ended up being okay.

Advice

Take every opportunity you can to be involved in a unique experience. This was not a well-known job so not many people knew to apply.

Assistant Nurse

May 2016 - August 2018 • Monticello, IL

What I liked

I loved getting to work with kids all summer. I learned a lot about pediatric health and medication administration. I got a one of a kind experience in nursing. I got to work directly with an RN who I learned a lot from.

What I wish was different

It was 24 hours a day for the majority of the summer, so I wish I got more time off or got paid more.

Advice

While working in a hospital is great experience for future health professionals, don't rule out unique experiences like this one.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Champaign, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work closely with a professor and to be trained in a lab environment.

What I wish was different

I wish that days were a little more regular and scheduled, and not just given different tasks to do at the beginning of each day.

Advice

Reach out to professors if you are interested in research! Most have projects going on and love student help, so don't be afraid.
