University of Iowa - Admissions

Admissions Representative

June 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I loved getting to interact with different high schoolers from around the midwest; it's always fun to answer the different questions that they have. I've also enjoyed getting to work with the professionals in the office, and getting a kind of 'behind the scenes' look at the admissions process.

What I wish was different

There have been a lot of employees recently that have left the office, several of whom were direct supervisors. They have all moved to other areas at the University of Iowa, so it was more career advancement than any sort of dislike.

Advice

When they tell you that you should practice your presentation multiple times throughout the week to get more comfortable with it, you should listen. Even when you have the presentation down and know exactly what you want to say, it helps a lot to be more comfortable in just standing and talking for 40 minutes while many people stare at you.

Advice

Push yourself to gain public speaking skills. It is a lifelong skill and something that many people fear, so it helps to have this in your skill set.
