Library Assistant

August 2015 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Work where you want to. I'm working toward a nursing degree, but I have also really enjoyed my experience with the library and wanted to work one more summer as a student rather than as an intern. Although these two areas of work are very different, I gained multiple experiences that I can use when I work in the health field.

Grant Writing and Research Assistant

September 2017 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

As a Grant Writing and Research Assistant, I learned SO many things. I started it as an on-campus job in the fall and continued through summer. From learning to write proposals and letters to researching organizations, I am now able to apply these skills to other jobs in my field.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd had an "insider" to tell me what the job was about before I applied. I found it on my college's job website and had no idea what I was doing when I applied. I didn't even know what grant writing was, though I did have an idea of what it was.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try things! Even if you think you're not qualified for a job, you may surprise yourself. I only knew about writing -- not grant writing specifically -- but I still tried. And I got hired!

Front Desk Receptionist

May - August 2018 • Arden Hills, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunities to get to know my supervisor better, particularly as she was juggling three groups of staff. Taking on simple tasks, such as organizing the staffing schedule for receptionists, meant I could help her work more efficiently.

What I wish was different

There were many slow mornings in between the busy dates when we checked groups in and out. This meant several hours of sitting with very little to do. I wish I had planned an appropriate project to work on during the quiet spells.

Advice

This is a hands-on, self-taught position. I had some formal training on the essentials of the job, but a lot of the things I learned were picked up on my own initiative. Read the manuals thoroughly and listen carefully to everything your supervisor tells you.

What I wish was different

The job itself was a bit monotonous, and the pay went down during the school year.

Event Assistant

May - August 2018 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

Working with the groups that came on campus and that could interact with.

What I wish was different

During office time, I wish I was given more work. When there wasn’t a group on campus we just sat in the office not doing anything.

Advice

The groups are very unique and not your usual people you interact with everyone. It teaches you patience. It is a great job for an internship and to gain the experience. It almost feels like you are in a summer camp with helping with overnights and can be fun if you’re a college student.

Permanent Collection TA

June 2018 • Roseville, MN

What I liked

I loved the work environment, my coworkers made the long days so much fun! I also loved the work itself--going through northwestern's permanent art collection was almost like a treasure hunt, and I was able to see and handle so much art every day.

What I wish was different

Maybe a little more consistency, some days were thrown off by schedule confusion with me and my supervisor, but really nothing else. I would have loved to work more!

Advice

You need to be very detail oriented to thrive working in permanent collections, but it's so worth it!
