University of Tennessee, Facilities Services

About University of Tennessee, Facilities Services

The new Facilities Services Complex, a 91,000-square-foot building on Sutherland Avenue houses more than 200 of the department’s employees after a two-year renovation and new construction project. The building was constructed in 1908 as a marble and precast factory. During the renovation, overhead cranes were preserved as decommissioned artifacts, and elements like the original steel structure, concrete floors, and wooden decking were refurbished. The office section of the building is assembled in an open floor plan to foster collaboration among employees and departments.

Compost Operations Student Assistant

February 2023 - May 2024 Knoxville, TN
“My employment at the Compost Facility was a life-altering event. It was there that I discovered a passion for bio-processing and waste-diversion, and first learned about the Biosystems Engineering degree path that I am now pursuing. I was also recruited as a research assistant to a member of the extension faculty in the Biosystems department there, thus furthering my long-term goals. I felt as though my work as well as my input on the facilities' processes were truly valued. I enjoyed the independence I was granted in completing my work, as well as the flexibility in working-hours. Working for the Compost Facility allowed me to develop skills that I never thought I would acquire, but that I immensely enjoyed such as operating a 50,000 lb excavator! The Compost Facility, and the wider Office of Sustainability, is a very inclusive environment welcoming of all people. The Compost Facility staff also fostered a sense of camaraderie that made the work not only easier, but also enjoyable. ”
