Make sure you actually know the skills needed for the job from the beginning. Otherwise, it's a hard uphill battle to get there.

Psychologist Research Assistant
June - September 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT
What I liked
I was amazed at how much I had learned in my Psychology courses at SUU that prepared me to work as a research assistant at a well-known psychology lab at the University of Utah. I had taken courses with Dr. Lynn White and Dr. Corser that taught me statistical analysis, research design, and critical thinking skills. Having this knowledge to bring to the lab at the U made a huge difference. I was able to spend more time learning NEW skills and not being taught/trained on the basics! In addition, I got to drive Teslas and Cadillacs every day, one of the best perks!
What I wish was different
In my short time at the lab, I noticed that because it was a small space and a small environment (a team of two PIs, and six research assistants), research assistants had extensive roles and "wore a lot of hats." Although everything worked itself out and things did run smoothly, I felt bad for the senior research assistants because they had SO much on their plate. When the senior RA's stayed late or had to come in on weekends, it made me feel as though I wasn't doing enough to help out. Due to budgeting, I understand the staff has to be limited, but I would make sure the roles were divided evenly between everyone working there.
Advice
Take advantage of opportunities in college to network with professors and mentors! I would not have had the experience I did working in the lab if it were not for the connections I made at SUU with the instructors. I always joke that my best friends in college were my professors, but I mean that! Not only did I learn so much about the specific courses from them, but they taught me true life skills and gave me A LOT of advise about the real world in their office outside of class. During the experience I had at the University of Utah, I was given a chance to network with other amazing researchers and mentors, that may come in handy during the next phases of my life!

Undergraduate Researcher
May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT
What I liked
It was a really great experience to do research somewhere else and see how larger universities work. It was also fun to meet new people interested in similar things.
What I wish was different
Over the summer most graduate students see this as their downtime which is the opposite for me in a working sense so it was sometimes hard to coordinate or get help from graduate students in the lab.
Advice
It will teach you a lot, good or bad, and show you what you like or want to do with your future. Overall beneficial and worthy of applying for.

SPUR 2019 Intern
May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT
What I liked
It was a great program, which enabled me to get into educational psychology research that I couldn't at TU. The program was designed to support summer research, and they did a good job accommodating students not from the University of Utah. The resources on campus were nice too, it was a great place to spend a summer.
What I wish was different
It would've been nice to have a bit more cohort events for the SPUR interns specifically. Otherwise I really enjoyed the program.
Advice
Even if you don't feel like you look good enough, apply anyway. You never know what student they're looking for. Experience is handy, but a real passion for what you want to do research in counts too.

Advice
If you want to work in a lab and don’t have a bunch of experience, volunteer a few hours a week in a lab you might be interested in. That way, they can hire you as soon as a position opens up, or if not, you now have enough relevant experience to confidently go after other lab positions.

communication Internship
May - September 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT
What I liked
I enjoyed working in the different environments with the department of the University of Utah Students of Equity and Diversity. The department had more than one event and more than one activity each week. It was a great experience to work with a large group with multiple backgrounds of life and nationalities.
What I wish was different
I wished I would have separated the semester into two . I crammed my internship in the summer semester. The work during the internship had me on my toes and moving quick for each event I was involved with during the weekends. I felt I missed opportunities to meet a large of people by working in a fast paced summer semester and department.
Advice
My advice to the next intern would be to be open with your schedule and to not limit to the weekends. The Department of Equity and Diversity work throughout the week and into the weekends. The missed opportunities I had during the summer were during my work schedule.

What I liked
Very flexible schedule, good pay, learning a lot, meeting many new people in the field.
What I wish was different
Honestly nothing.
Advice
Check your academic email lol you might receive an offer and not realize until it's too late, which happened to me and caused me to get a lab position 5 or so months later than I would have otherwise.
