Camp Counselor Intern

May - August 2019 • Harrisonburg, VA

What I liked

I loved the environment and my coworkers. UREC is a very motivated environment where everyone wants to be the best they can.

What I wish was different

I would not have changed anything about my experience.

Advice

You need to have patience and understanding when working with the campers. It is exhausting but you have to give it 100% every day because while you may be there all summer, some kids only have 1 week and it is the highlight of their entire summer.

What I liked

The customer service experience gained helped me to better develop my communication skills for a future career in a professional environment.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would share that I was able to interact with many different people, which allowed me to develop adaptability skills. This internship prepared me for a professional work environment that is constantly changing- which is what I am seeking as I look to become a nurse.

Camp Counselor

May - July 2018 • Pullman, WA

What I liked

Working with kids and being active was a rewarding experience by itself. Our supervisors committed time and effort to helping us develop skills for working in the camp environment over time as well.

What I wish was different

Schedules did not reflect the expectation of coming early and staying late, which could be frustrating at times. For full day staff, what was listed as a 30 minute lunch break came with the expectation of clocking back in five minutes early and often putting off clocking out by up to ten minutes.

Advice

Taking care of your body is vital for a job like this. Drinking tons of water, getting at least 9 hours of sleep, and eating well will save you from a lot of trouble later when you work early mornings and full days with children much much more energized than you.
