Pathways Engineering Intern

February 2018 • Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to work during the semester. ATC ensures that it's interns are given the ability to see what capabilities and job opportunities are available for their interns. My coworkers were willing to offer their help and advise with my school work. Lastly, this opportunity allowed for me to obtain a security clearance, and "get my foot in the door" with a government position.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been made aware of this program's existence sooner.

Advice

The pathways internship program is an extremely valuable opportunity. It both looks great on a resume and gives the intern a high likelihood of continued employment with the government.

Student Trainee (Mechanical Engineering)

June - August 2018 • Aberdeen, MD

What I liked

I feel so grateful for my opportunity to intern here. There was plenty of hands-on work, and so many new experiences to learn from. Most importantly for me, my coworkers were great mentors for me in helping me gain more confidence in my skills as a mechanical engineer. The work environment was very healthy: everyone took pride in their work and were very friendly and supportive of one another. They took me seriously even as an intern, giving me opportunities to attend meetings, and contribute meaningful work towards on going projects. It was a really valuable experience for me.

What I wish was different

Over the course of the summer I was given a variety of tasks on several different projects. While that was valuable, I think it might have also been nice to have a consistent project to return to when I had finished my currently assigned tasks.

Advice

Definitely take all the opportunities you get to experience different aspects of the job, and to get out of the office and talk to the people you are helping to design for. This internship offers a lot, but it is up to you to take the opportunity to make the most of it.
