I love using my education and policy knowledge to research and analyze how to remove barriers to education in foreign countries!
What I wish was different
I wish this internship was not virtual because I would really get the chance to know the staff and build better connections.
Advice
I did not think I was qualified enough for this position - it was open to people pursuing undergraduate as well as graduate degrees, and I was a rising second year undergrad when I applied. Its really important that people put themselves out there and apply for roles even if the description seems a bit intimidating. I think we all have this pressure to meet every single quality on the “ideal candidate profile” but at the end of the day, applying will never hurt!

GIS Geographer
May - August 2019 • Remote, OR
What I liked
It was a wonderful exposure to the world of geographic information science. I was able to apply some of the knowledge and skills I've learned as a BS Geography major at ASU during this 12-week remote internship.
What I wish was different
I wish to have had experienced the on site version of this internship. I wish to experience applying GIS skills on site after experiencing the uniqueness of a virtual setting, in that way I can be flexible with my skills applications
Advice
Be prepared to engage in a classroom-like weekly session with lecturer/steward with other students and some experts in the field of geographic information science.

Outreach and Communications Intern
September 2018 - May 2019 • Jakarta, Indonesia
What I liked
I loved being able to do meaningful work and feeling like my input was appreciated and taken into account. We were given some very important tasks to be completed, and I felt like I was being useful, which was exciting! I learned a lot about international development and discovered that I would love to work in this field.
What I wish was different
It was hard to coordinate with my team since the internship was online. Sometimes fellow interns were unresponsive, so it was a learning experience for me.
Advice
Take every opportunity and work hard! It's very clear which of the interns can be counted on, and your superiors will definitely love you if you are one of them. Gain as much experience and skills as you can that can be put on a resume and used in future jobs.
