I have loved working there and confirming my desire to be a Civil Engineer. I have a great boss and colleagues who encourage me to grow and stretch my skills and comfort zone daily.

Civil Engineer Intern
May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT
What I liked
Atmosphere was friendly and motivated. My field engineer that I interned for was very helpful in helping me learn more about what UDOT does and I was able to learn and help him on what he does for UDOT such as monitor the project, make change orders, and review material approvals.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to stay longer. For the first while, I helped with mill and fill projects where they mill out the road and repave. With these projects, they consisted of milling and filling and also making sure the pedestrian ramps were up to the new standards. A little bit before I left, there was a huge aqueduct project that was starting. They had 7ft diameter pipe going into a large trench that had to be dug out my a massive excavator. It was so large that they also had to lower a small excavator into the trench to dig it out more because the large excavators could reach that deep. It was a very cool project and I wish I could have stayed and watch it develop for longer.
Advice
Try to get involved. I have heard stories where interns go into internships like mine, but they get the crap jobs like counting signs and such. Explain to your employer you want to learn more about the profession and what it has to offer instead of doing the menial tasks no one else wants to do. When employers treat interns that way, the interns are less likely to want a full-time job from that business.

What I liked
I loved the atmosphere of UDOT and how great it was to learn from people that have worked here for 10+ years. I loved my supervisor and the tasks he would give me. I was also very glad that everyone was always ready to teach you about things that I wasn't familiar with.
What I wish was different
Everything worked out just fine and I think it was great how it was.
Advice
I think it would be beneficial to ask all kinds of questions to people in other professions within the organization!
