Retail Salesperson
May 2015 • Redding, CA
What I liked
Fun coworkers, fast paced.
What I wish was different
No upward mobility, and not in my career field.
Advice
Do what you have to do to finish school! Getting a job or internship in your field is ideal and valuable experience, but if nothing else, just having a job will help ease the financial struggle.
Even if you don't need the money now, it might provide a cushion for something unexpected later. Even if the job isn't in your field, there is always valuable experiences to be gained (teamwork, conflict resolution, how to act professional, etc.)
Don't spend your summers idle. After you graduate, some employers WILL ask.

Process Engineering Intern
April - July 2019 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
I loved my department. Everyone was extremely helpful in answering the many questions that I had. The work was very much similar to what I’ve been learning in my Chemical Engineering classes and there were tons of opportunities for hands on experience.
What I wish was different
I honestly wish I could’ve stayed longer and had more projects with more variety. It would’ve been cool to shadow people in different departments for a day or so.
Advice
Be self motivated and really work hard on finding solutions before you go ask your boss or mentor. Don’t be afraid to talk to anyone.

Reliability Engineering Intern
May - August 2019 • Three Rivers, TX
What I liked
I did real, useful work that would have existed independent of my internship. Valero has a great internship program and provides good training for interns.
What I wish was different
When I finished my main projects, I had to do some digging to find more that I could effectively do before the internship ended.
Advice
Ask questions! People at Valero are very willing to answer them, and you'll understand things a lot better if you ask.
