Universal Banker Intern

June - August 2019 • Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ

What I liked

The environment was very friendly and the company was really invested in the interns.

What I wish was different

They had never had interns in the position before so I wish they were a little mor prepared with the training schedule and letting managers know what we were supposed to be doing.

Advice

They had some optional group projects and challenges that the interns could choose to participate in I’m really glad I volunteered for one of these because it gave me more networking opportunities and exposure to meeting executive members of the company. So my advise would be to volunteer for extra things and put yourself out there.

What I liked

My projects consisted of impactful work - an Application Inventory of all the Bank's applications, along with a Knowledge Repository (Internal Sharepoint page used on Valley's portal) for the new EA department.

What I wish was different

A few more stressful situations would have benefited me to simulate what I will be going through in my future career endeavors.

Advice

Apply through handshake! I received this internship offer along with a full time job offer from Fannie Mae because I applied through handshake.

What I liked

It was my first job banking job. Genuinely enjoyed learning new concepts and customer transactions besides just regular retail ones.

What I wish was different

Technology-wise Valley was a little behind, it was quite easy for one to make any mistakes.

Advice

Never go too fast while dealing with money, it's easy to make mistakes. Stay calm and count slowly, no need to hurry.

Universal Banker Intern

June - August 2019 • Little Falls, NJ

What I liked

I liked being able to work with clients on a daily basis. Listening to their financial goals and challenges really helped me understand the importance of banking. I loved the opportunity to come into work every day and try to come up with solutions to help clients achieve these goals and face these challenges.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been able to have more influence in decision making, but as an intern, this was understandable.

Advice

I would advise Valley Bank to continue its intern program and to continue to encourage students to learn. I would advise interns to come into the job with on open mind and be ready to learn, since it was a great learning experience for me.
