I really loved the community that my Vans store had. Everyone was very supporting of one-another and there was always a welcoming environment.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to have a more consistent schedule and to have been paid above minimum wage.

Advice

Always ask about what your salary will be before accepting the job, and don’t be afraid to negotiate salaries!

What I liked

It was a great experience as my first retail job. It was a change of pace from my previous job of two and a half years, a cook at a local Buffalo Wild Wings. All of my coworkers and managers were great and I'm super excited to work with all of them again. I have a passion for the brand, so being able to work for it was an amazing experience since I had been anticipating the opportunity since early high school.

What I wish was different

The store itself is small, so a bigger location in the mall would be more ideal, but that's not up to me. On busier days, like Saturdays during the "back-to-school" season, it was hard to walk through the store at times because of how crowded it would be in the small location with how popularity of the brand at a place like the Mall of America.

Advice

Go into it open-minded. You spend a lot of time talking to people and bringing the Vans experience to them. What's very interesting about working at my location, the Mall of America, is that with it being a worldwide tourist attraction, for some people, my coworkers and I are the first impression of the brand to our customers, which is very important to us at my location.

I loved the work environment and my co-workers. I personally love shoes and everything to do with them, so being surrounded by them for the summer and informing others about the benefits of Vans was an awesome experience!

I wish I had started the job sooner. It was a wonderful place to work.

A piece of advice I would share would be to be pro-active in everything you do. Being on top of things and being a reliable co-worker goes a long way.

I wish I would have gotten more hours to work, new hires would only get 1 or 2 shifts a week.

If you have an opportunity to work at a Vans store, I would say go for it. You could make some very good friends!

I loved the atmosphere and being able to diversify myself by learning about a brand and how to represent and sell to the brands customers.

I worked for longer to gain more insight and possibly have more responsibilities.

Each and every job whether it be from cashier to line cook has some sort of skill or experience that you can learn and be able to apply to other jobs on larger scales so do not be afraid to list “inferior jobs” on your resume rather use them to your advantage.

What I liked

Working at Vans was an amazing experience. The company is one that I have grown up supporting and being able to see how positive and intelligent the people are that work behind the scenes was great. I learned an insane amount and enjoyed the company culture.

What I wish was different

If anything, I wish I could have gotten more experience in the Marketing department. I was still able to network and talk with numerous directors in positions that I had interest in and it was really great to be able to have access to their insight.

Don't be afraid to reach out to different people in a company if you're interested in their career and could potentially see yourself doing something similar to their job title.

I love the environment and community that Vans creates in its stores. The people that work there are such amazing and interesting people.

I wish I could have found this earlier but I’m still working there during the school year so obviously I like it.

Advice

Retail is a good job to have to just make some money. If you find a place that actually cares about its employees then I would stick with it because they are hard to come around.
