Founded in 1972 at UVM with the help of student activists, VPIRG is Vermont’s largest environmental and consumer advocacy group, with over 45,000 members and supporters. The combination of statewide grassroots organizing and strategic advocacy in the state government has helped pass groundbreaking progressive legislation. Some of our most recent victories include: banning fracking, labeling GMO's, passing same day/automatic voter registration, passing a law that establishes an ethics commission in our state government, as well as requiring that all candidates for state government have to disclose their tax returns before appearing on the ballot. Some of our current legislative priorities are: expanding the tax return requirements to presidential candidates, passing a strict toxic chemical reform law, putting a price on carbon pollution, protecting and expanding the bottle bill, and passing paid family and medical leave.
