VA Work Study Intern

September 2017 - March 2020 • Wilmington, NC

What I liked

The people I worked with in UNCW's Office of Admissions! Everyone was so kind and knew what to do, what to expect, and how to make work more meaningful.

What I wish was different

Oftentimes, the work did seem very repetitive. I do wish there was more diversity within the program.

Advice

Be patient through the process! Starting a new job can be a little shaky, but enjoy the learning process.

Physical Therapist Intern

June - August 2019 • White City, OR

What I liked

I enjoyed being exposed to a different type of community than I am use to. It was extremely valuable to learn how to treat patients with chronic pain. I was able to see a few patients finish up their PT experience and being able to hear how much PT has improved their life affirmed my career aspirations.

Councilor

May 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I spent the summer doing QRP training and working with clinically depressed Veterans. I out reached to all those assigned and organized tabling events in order to inform more people about their VA benefits. I also had a few crisis calls from Veterans on the verge of suicide to which I needed to remain calm and empathetic. It was a very somber experience

What I wish was different

Honestly I dont look for things to complain about in life. Schedule was busy but I like being busy and the work load was fulfilling. Theres a copious amount of long drawn out meetings I needed to attend but those are important so I cant take concern with them.

Advice

You need to be creative, this is a internship with the VA that allows you to do what you feel works best to help improve the access of information to and the quality life of our nations veterans.
