UI/UX Researcher Intern

April 2020 • Columbia, MO

What I liked

This company is great at providing you with a challenging experience and giving you the tools to grow and learn in different areas.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have everyone in the office instead of working remotely.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask to learn new things. If you have extra time just reach out to your supervisor for more things to do. They'll send you plenty of things to do and you'll learn new skills. Because I asked I got Tableau training and ran entire research projects by myself.

Home Buying Concierge Intern

What I liked

I loved the real world application of the information that I have been learning from classes. They allowed for us to work from home in such a crazy time. It was a wonderful experience learning how to work remotely and improve communication skills through technology. I felt like I had real responsibilities that mattered and helped push the company forward. The internship program has an amazing set of enrichment classes/events that we were able to attend and participate in. There were speakers that talked about a wide range of topics that pertained to working in the professional world that I found very helpful. I strongly suggest that if you do join this program, to go to as many events as you can. Another thing that I absolutely loved was the culture that VU has built. I felt so appreciated as an employee and everyone I came into contact with were so lovely. I really wanted to go into work everyday and strive to be better because I felt like the company valued me and everyone around me were so welcoming.

Advice

Communication is key. One thing that the team of interns I was apart of always stressed was to keep open communication. This helped mitigate any misunderstandings and helped us meet deadlines in a more timely manner. Another thing that communication helped with was allowing for everyone to suggest things that could improve the process in order to become more productive in our tasks as a team.
