What I liked

I loved working with the Parks and Recreation department! I was allowed to explore different aspects of the field including event prep and implementation, research, and administrative planning. I was offered the opportunity to shadow many different roles within the field, which added a lot to the overall experience. My bosses were also extremely supportive and helpful in finding ways to ensure the internship would be beneficial to my overall career goals.

What I wish was different

I started during the height of COVID, so we were limited in the recreation events that we could host. The department was very creative in finding ways to modify events so they could be held safely, but I wish I could experience the events at full capacity.

Advice

This internship will ultimately be what you make it -- ask to learn about the different roles in P&R and be willing to try something new! Also, engage with participants at each event. A key aspect of parks and rec is community cohesion, so do your part to connect with residents.
