About ViviendasLeón

ViviendasLeon is a non-profit, 501 c 3 U.S. organization based in San Francisco, with offices in León, Nicaragua and Sololá, Guatemala. Our mission is to eliminate rural poverty in Central America. We empower and equip rural communities to be the agents of their own transformation.

Our development program empowers rural families to improve their standard of living by building their capacities in areas of resilience, self-esteem, cooperation, and leadership while training for environmental stewardship, farming, and small business development. We believe that rural poverty can be eliminated by understanding and addressing its root causes -- socio-emotional, environmental and practical -- and creating a culture of transformation within the communities where it exists. For more than twenty years, we have worked with rural communities in Nicaragua and Central America to achieve measurable, sustainable improvements in their standards of living.

ViviendasLeón seeks partnerships with Universities whose curriculum supports outside the classroom experiences in research, field work, thesis, capstone, and project development and implementation. We offer internships both in the U.S. and abroad for students interested in rural development and non-profit management. Through partnerships and internships, we hope to advance the efficacy, scope and scale of our work among rural communities in Central America in our five program areas: Human Capacity Training, Farming and Nutrition, Water and Sanitation, Small Business development, and Infrastructure development.

Social Media and Research Intern

“I liked that this internship was very customizable. There was always an abundance of things to do, and my supervisors allowed me to chose the tasks that I thought were more interesting. Since we were such a small team, I got a lot of hand-on experience and insight into how non-profits function. ”
