About Voice of America

VOA is the largest U.S. International broadcaster, reaching over 326 million people weekly on radio, television and web in nearly 50 languages. We engage with our audiences on social media including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to share content and to interact with them. At VOA, we work with colleges and universities to provide students the opportunity to apply coursework learned in the classroom, with practice in the workplace. Students work on teams that relate to their majors and career goals and our Internship Program accepts students for Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.

We are looking for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a college or university program--especially students majoring in Journalism, Broadcasting, Communications, International Relations or Government. We welcome students with interests and capabilities in audio, video, web, mobile, social media, graphics, library sciences and engineering. We are also interested in students with excellent writing, research and communications skills. Do you speak other languages besides English? Since we broadcast in almost 50 languages, we welcome your help in our Language Services on programming, too!

VOA interns who work with our Language Services, Specials or Documentary Unit, Newsroom or Media Lab have the opportunity to research and produce daily video programming and social media feeds. You may get a chance to be in front of the camera or operate one of our Facebook Live studies or even create graphics for a broadcast.

Students working in Broadcast Operations or our Asset Media Branch are behind-the-scenes experts utilizing the library sciences or engineering skills. Students with the Learning English team use their education training and writing skills. Depending on the assignment, duties can include: research; writing; editing video; posting social media; logging; transcription or organizing footage. We also have opportunities working with senior management teams, as well as other support offices. Duties in those offices vary, but involve research, writing and special projects for management.

Reviews

Production Intern

August 2019 - August 2020 Washington, DC
“I loved the team I worked with and how flexible everything was. They made me feel like an asset to the team and gave me many opportunities to get experience that I don't necessarily learn in school. ”

Project Intern

June 2019 - August 2019 Washington, DC
“I loved being able to practice my French and learn tools used by the multi-media producers to share and publish video, news articles and Facebook/Instagram posts. I had a lot of autonomy and was able to approach anyone with questions I had. Since I worked in the French-to-Africa department, I also gained a lot of insight into the non-European Francophone world which I really appreciated. I definitely gained skills in editing videos and translating scripts as well. ”
