VTPrivateye, LLC

Intern

July - August 2023 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

This internship experience was very valuable. It was very hands-on and you receive on-the-job training which helps interns take full advantage of the internship. I do not know of many other internships where interns are so involved with the work. All of the investigators were very kind and extremely well-versed in their fields. I felt welcomed and guided through everything that I worked on which set me up for success.

Advice

I would advise anyone looking into this internship to ensure that they have enough time to dedicate to it because it can be very demanding and includes long drives that mean you could end work late/ have to come in early.

Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I interned here during Summer of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic, and though remote, it was an excellent experience! I spent the summer reading and analyzing cases and eventually coming up with narratives to create screenplays. It was a great creative challenge, and Susan also made sure to have guest speakers come in so we could learn from them as well.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been in person so I could meet everyone! But still a great experience remote.

Advice

Really engage with the material! It's extremely interesting.

Investigative Intern

June - August 2023 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

My time interning at VTPrivateye was very enriching and eye-opening. This position allowed me to see the faults in the criminal-legal system firsthand, and the work we do helps combat systematic inequality. This position allowed me to jump right in to assisting investigations, and I felt like my work was valued and made a difference in people’s lives. Susan and the team at VTPI are awesome, they take the interns under their wings, and cater to individual learning interests. There is lots of ability to grow and move up positions and increase responsibility. I truly feel that I learned more during my 3 months at VTPI than during my entire college career. I would highly recommend this internship to anyone who is interested in learning more about our legal system, psychology, criminology and more!

Intern

June 2022 - April 2023 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

VTPI provided a great internship experience during my gap year before law school! Not only was the work interesting and engaging, but it was also very meaningful. I learned so much about the legal field and walked away with professional skills that I know will benefit me in my future career as a lawyer. As an intern, and eventual employee, at VTPI, I genuinely felt valued, supported, and listened to by my co-workers and superiors. While my time at VTPI has ended, the skills, knowledge, and professional relationships I built will last a lifetime. I highly recommend pursuing an internship at VTPI for anyone who is interested in social justice, the legal field, or related areas.

Intern

June - December 2021 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

VTPrivateye, LLC provided a great hands-on experience to dive into the field of private investigation and the legal system more generally. I was able to jump in to case work as an intern, assisting with client and witness interviews, drafting memos and learning how to navigate the local court system to pull case files and records. Susan's depth of experience and passion for her clients was clear, and it was a pleasure to work with her and the investigative team.

Private investigator Intern

June - October 2022 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I really enjoyed this experience becasue I got a hands-on look into the job of a private investigator. Being that VTPriavteye is a small tight-knit group I was able to have experiences I otherwise would not have been able to have at a larger firm. My exposure to various tasks we were assigned helped grow my knowledge of this kind of work. There was not one day that I did not do something I had never done before. I was exposed to the interworkings of not only investigation but also legal paperwork, surveillance, memo writing, and client interviews.

What I wish was different

I think there could have been a bit more organization and streamlined practices for the different kinds of documents we as interns needed to produce. I know this was something that was in the process of being improved upon.

Advice

Be open to anything, and be a hard worker. Initiative goes a long way and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Investigative Intern

January 2023 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

My internship with VTPI was super hands-on. I shadowed investigators on tons of field work, such as witness/client interviews in homes or at correctional facilities. These experiences were super eye-opening and gave me the opportunity to get a lot of interviewing and report-writing experience. My internship turned into full-time employment, and I am now a licensed investigator in Vermont.
