Marketing, Analytics, E-commerce Intern

June 2019 • Edison, NJ

What I liked

I loved the work environment - very relaxed, yet very professional. My team was very welcoming, friendly, helpful, and proactive and I learned a lot from each and every one of them.

What I wish was different

It was truly a great experience and I do not know what I would have liked to be different.

Advice

Always stay on top of your agenda. It is very easy to get distracted and lose track of emails, and it is very important to stay on top of emails in order to not lose important information on projects and meetings, etc. I found that making folders for each different type of email you receive was very helpful. Sometimes, when a lot of unopened would add up, I dedicated a half hour before work to sorting them.

I learned a lot about the industry just from being around it so much, especially since I was looking at sales figures, I started to really understand what items drive store traffic. The company culture is great.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was given some more meaningful tasks. I did a lot of sales analytics work which can be VERY repetitive.

Advice

Great people work at Wakefern, very friendly vibes. You will learn a lot about the industry.

Own Brands Marketing Coop

June 2019 • Edison, NJ

What I liked

Wakefern Food Corp has a strong summer intern program. There were about 90 summer interns from many different colleges. I was/am part of the Own Brands team, specifically the marketing team. There were many opportunities to build my network and attend events to further my professional career. My team is great and I learned a lot.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more notice and communication about upcoming events. There are many different locations where a summer intern can work, so doing the group "Big Idea" project was difficult getting everyone to participate and be at most meetings.

Advice

Wakefern is unlike any other company I have worked for because it is a cooperative and such a large company. The people are great, but since it is a cooperative, there is a learning curve to how the corporation operates.

VMO and Pricing intern

May - August 2019 • Edison, NJ

What I liked

The one thing I enjoyed the most is that they put me on so many different projects. They didn't just makes me get coffee and do typical intern activities, rather I worked on multiple presentations that I got to present in-front of other Wakefern associates.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to go around to the different departments and see what they were like. I very much enjoyed the position that I was in, but I wish I went around and saw the marketing or category manager departments as well. this would have ultimately increased my knowledge in the different departments of the company.

Advice

The one piece of advice that I have is to always ask questions when you are confused about something. I would ask the other members on my team when key boss wasn't around and they were extremely helpful. they were very welcoming to answer my questions, and as a result improved my work.

Social Media Intern

May - August 2019 • Edison, NJ

What I liked

What I loved most about Wakefern was the culture of my department. Everyone was so friendly, willing to help me with anything, and answered every question I had with respect and patience. I loved interning there in 2018 so much that I went back this past summer!

What I wish was different

My only complaint was that the Big Idea intern competition teams were assigned. I think choosing our own teams would've been a better system.

Advice

Be outgoing! When starting a new job, even just as an intern, it's so important to get your name out there and network with whoever you can. You'll often find that associates and higher ups are very willing to get to know you.
