Summer Accounting Intern

What I liked

The people at the firm are very friendly and knowledgeable. The firm also puts in a lot of effort and resources to maintain high technology software and systems. I got a variety of experience in different accounting skills.

What I wish was different

Because I was a summer intern (as opposed to winter) the days were a bit slow sometimes. However, there are different learning opportunities such as different trainings/certification opportunities.

Advice

Be proactive in asking for work, communicate well, and ask questions!

Tax Season Intern

January - August 2022 • Arlington, VA

What I liked

Staff is friendly and helpful Mentorship structure - you get a designated person as your mentor so you know who to turn to with questions Flexible hours - they will work around your school/class schedule Good pay

What I wish was different

You get what you put into the internship - if you ask lots of questions and ask for more projects, you'll learn more vs if you are shy and don't get involved, you won't learn as much It'd be nice if there were more clear guidelines for what you will learn/can have a chance to work on - to ensure that each intern walks away with a base set of skills/project experience regardless of their eagerness to ask for more work or their mentor's willingness to train/give more projects

Advice

Ask questions and ask for assignments! That's how you'll get the most out of the internship

What I liked

The internship had very flexible hours and allowed me to do the things I needed to do outside of work so that I can manage working and study as a student.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more flexibility to do more variety of work outside of QBO and tax analysis, however it is a tax firm so that is to be expected.

Advice

Make sure you ask questions early, it can be daunting but they are very friendly and fair. I always had transparency with everyone I worked with and made alot of friends.

Accounting Intern

January - December 2020 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

I like the variable projects I worked on and the on-job-training. I did monthly accounting tasks and individual returns. I helped with PPP applications. And everyone was so friendly and supportive. I like the open-door policy that you can ask anyone for help when you have problems on projects. I also like the paperless working environment. I did almost all projects on computers via various software. It's very efficient and organized.

What I wish was different

Having an internship during the COVID-19 pandemic was quite different. I only wish we could go back to the office and work together.

Advice

I would suggest asking as many questions as possible and always double checking your work before sending it to customers. This really benefits the growth of an intern to a business profession.
