Western Oregon University

Student worker

August 2023 • Monmouth, OR

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoy my experience at WOU. The flexibility of my schedule seamlessly aligns with my dual enrollment pursuits, enabling me to effectively prioritize my academic responsibilities. Furthermore, I highly appreciate the opportunity to establish connections with new acquaintances who may play influential roles in my future endeavors. My role as a student worker not only imparts invaluable experiences but also equips me with fresh skills that I can apply to post-graduation job opportunities. Moreover, the income I earn through this work contributes to covering tuition and other essential expenses during my student years. Working as a student worker also allows me to engage more deeply in academic and extracurricular activities and access campus resources. I am not merely a student; I am an active contributor to the university's daily operations, which strengthens my connection to the institution and the community.

What I wish was different

Nothing, everything is going wonderfully. I'm still a student worker at WOU, and I absolutely love it. I currently hold two different jobs to assist in covering my tuition expenses, and I'm fortunate to have exceptional supervisors. They are understanding and fully aware that my priority is my education, and they support me in that regard.

Advice

Working as a student at WOU is the ultimate path to forge new friendships, access valuable school resources, join clubs and programs, acquire additional skills, among many other benefits. If you're seeking a way to become actively engaged in campus life, this is the ideal route to take. It's worth noting that every on-campus job comes with flexibility, as each supervisor understands that your education is your top priority. Additionally, I recommend staying connected through the Handshake app. It's an excellent tool for discovering new on-campus and off-campus job opportunities, as well as internships. It can be an invaluable resource for your career and educational journey.

Business Office Student Worker

January 2019 - June 2020 • Monmouth, OR

What I liked

It was a really fun experience and I learned a lot of new things like working in an office and having responsibilities working with money etc.

What I wish was different

Perhaps I would have liked having my own office but I understand that for a student worker that might be too early.

Advice

People are very sensitive about their money so it is important to have patience and look at the situation from both sides.

Do not over work yourself. There's a lot of steps involved to getting everything done. If you're spread too thin it won't work.
