Western University of Health Sciences

Summer Health Professions Education Program

June - August 2019 • Pomona, CA

What I liked

During this program, I learned a lot about health professions, especially optometry. We studied multiple cases studies and how it corresponds to the various bodily systems. We also had the opportunity to learn tips and tricks about medical school and what it actually takes to get there.

What I wish was different

I wish that I knew I needed a letter of recommendation from the science department and not just any teacher letter of recommendation. It did not hinder me in any way but it would have been helpful to know.

Advice

I would advise everyone to apply early. The sooner you apply, the better your chances of getting in.

SHPEP Scholar

June - July 2018 • Pomona, CA

What I liked

I liked the fact that this program was made for pre-med students that are not sure if they want to go into the medical field but want to explore their options. This program allowed me to do clinical rotations in different departments like dentistry, podiatry, optometry, nursing, medical, etc. in order for me to explore my options. There was also shadowing opportunities, courses in health disparities and financial literacy (to help you manage your money to pay for medical school), and networking events. This was one of the best learning opportunities in medicine I have ever had.

What I wish was different

I wish that this internship paid a little bit more because it is very rigorous and requires a lot of time and commitment. It was hard to not work a full time job and earn more money because I need the money from the summer for textbooks and school expenses.

Advice

I would say that all pre-med students should do this internship to really explore the medical field and see if this is something they want to do. This gives you an idea of what it is like to be a medical student and learn in a professional school before actually going to medical school.

What I liked

Everything. Getting to intern and shadow varying healthcare professionals while being a student taking relevant coursework for as someone who plans to become a healthcare professional was exactly what I wanted my summer to consist of.

Nothing.
