Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay

Recreational Therapy Intern

May - August 2019 • Virginia Beach, VA

What I liked

During my internship, I really liked how much independence my supervisor gave me. By the end of the internship, I was completing tasks that I would be completed as a certified therapeutic recreational specialist. I loved working with the residents at Westminster and enjoyed being on the team to provide the best possible healthcare possible.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wished would have been different is that my internship would have been paid. With it being unpaid, it created a strong financial burden for me and my family especially having to pay for the class that came along with it.

Advice

As a recreational therapy intern, I would suggest working with a population that you may not be as interested in working within your future career because the experience could really change your mind. Be open-minded when looking for agencies to potentially intern at.

Restaurant Server

February 2018 • Virginia Beach, VA

What I liked

I was able to meet a lot of the residents and learn about their lives before they ended up in the retirement home.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more of a heads-up of what I was getting into for working at a retirement home.

Advice

Be able to take criticism. As the residents have gotten older they have learned what they like and what they don't like. They will let you know if they don't like something and at times it comes across rude.
