Wheaton College - HoneyRock Center for Leadership Development

Camp counselor/wilderness guide

June - August 2022 • Three Lakes, WI

What I liked

FANTASTIC atmosphere and incredible staff development and training both before, during, and after campers were there. Walked away feeling like I was seen and developed as a person rather than another seasonal staff member.

What I wish was different

More congruence with upper level staff

Advice

Go in with an open mind and prepare to be challenged.

Recreational Leadership Intern

June - August 2020 • Three Lakes, WI

What I liked

The community of HoneyRock is amazing. People are all there to serve the greater kingdom of God together through outdoor experiences, and it is wonderful. I met so many cool people and made some really great friends.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have been longer. Due to COVID, the camp season was cut in half. This gave us less time to build relationships and skills for the job.

Advice

Push yourself out of your comfort zone. College is a great time to take a risk and go somewhere cool to work. Get some great experiences while you can.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2020 • Three Lakes, WI

What I liked

I loved getting to serve with and work with the other staff and getting to know the campers that were a part of my cabins and investing in them in ways that I really hope made a big difference in their lives.

What I wish was different

I honestly can't think of something that could have been different aside from COVID-19, but perhaps having a few more breaks or times to rest throughout the week would have been nice, but that would have been hard to do with counselors and contact tracing, so I understand why it couldn't happen.

Advice

I would say that no one is ever truly prepared for this job, but the Lord works in the best ways so just trust in Him and allow Him to give you what you need in the moment. Learn more and more how to rely on and depend on Him.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Three Lakes, WI

What I liked

They had three weeks of training on leadership style, how to lead, and strategic leadership qualities. I loved that training, and it prepared me well. Leading for seven weeks helped me gain confidence and taught me a lot of things about myself. I loved the friends I made, being outside all summer, and talking about Jesus and having fun with children all summer. I grew in many ways because of this opportunity.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything had been different.

Advice

Prepare to be tired often, but filled up by the joy and fun of the job, children, and Jesus! Also the community of co-workers is such an encouraging and uplifting environment.

Urban Passage Track Leader

July - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I appreciated the network of support, ranging from the group leaders within my track, to my supervisor and other Wheaton administrators and faculty. It was a work environment filled with people who valued my personal growth and cared for me while challenging me.

What I wish was different

Advice

Passage track leading will be more work than you expect, but it will be both tiring and rewarding. Maintain a healthy rhythm of rest. See it as a chance not only to serve, but to grow as a leader and to grow personally.

May - August 2018 • Three Lakes, WI

What I liked

I really liked how teaching us leadership was mostly just throwing us into leadership roles and helping us along the way.

What I wish was different

I wish summer was longer so we could have kept going and performing our work for a longer amount of time.

Advice

Don't go into any session expecting to know what it's going to be like, because every session comes with its own, unique surprises.
