Where Y'at Magazine

Creative Writing Intern

September - December 2020 • New Orleans, LA

What I liked

The content that I was given to write covered a wide array of subjects and seriousness. I was able to grow a very in-depth portfolio of everything from simple news articles to in-depth restaurant guides. My supervisor was very nice and wanted to make sure that I was comfortable with all of my pieces and even encouraged me to pitch my own topics.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish that had been different is that this was a paid internship. There was a lot of work to be done that required multiple days of in-depth work, like restaurant guides, that should have been paid projects. Although I am grateful for the exposure, it still would have been nice to be compensated.

Advice

This is an excellent opportunity to have your work put out into the world, so if you really want to do this, don't hesitate! The feeling you get when you see your name at the top of an article for the first time is incredible! This is a perfect place to dip your feet into digital publishing!

Social Media

January - May 2019 • New Orleans, LA

What I liked

It was a small team and the office was really nice. There was also street parking which I liked. It wasn't far from Loyola and was right by Magazine Street. I also liked that I got to do more than just social media like covering press events and doing photography for them and writing articles about it. Josh, the owner, is a really kind and relaxed boss.

What I wish was different

I wish it would've been PAID! I would've stayed there if it was paid. I also wish they would have looked through and edited the two articles I wrote for them before they put it online.

Advice

Great team and I loved the small team environment. I learned how to cover press events which was really amazing and it helped me get better at creating content and photography.

What I liked

It was great because I simultaneously fulfilled my second tier community service credit by completing additional online writing assignments! I also had the opportunity to attend many events around New Orleans.
