Whim Social

Marketing Intern

May 2020 • Charleston, SC

What I liked

I’ve never taken a marketing or business class in my life before this internship. But after only a couple of months, I was running an entire ambassador program in Charleston! Without ever taking a class in any of these fields, I’ve worked with: social media marketing, email marketing, graphic design, advertising, brand management, consumer behavior, copywriting, leading teams, organizing sponsored events, sales pitching, cold calling, blogging, and so much more. All of my stress about getting my degree and a decent job in Communications (minor in Marketing) is gone, because anything that’ll show up on a exam or job interview, I’ve already done at least 3 times in the real-world!

What I wish was different

This is a hard question, because the only thing I wish was different is also one of the best things that’s happened to me at this job! When I first started my internship it was a sticky situation because the Head of Marketing at the time was about to leave the company, so I didn’t get a crash-course in marketing like I imagined. So my summer was a lot of trial and error, figuring out how to be a efficient marketing intern who’s never learned a thing about marketing. But the plus side, I got to see exactly how my actions were playing out in the real world, and got the freedom to try new things and learn as I go.

Advice

If you’re looking for an internship that will allow you the space and freedom to learn, grow, and apply your knowledge to the real-world, this is the company for you. No questions asked. I was afraid that as a young woman without much experience, I would be talked over, ignored, or put in the corner. But at Whim, my ideas are valid, my thoughts are valid, I AM VALID, and my team supports me. That’s all I could ever ask!
