Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Care Intern

May - July 2023 • Medford, NJ

What I liked

They trained interns on any part of the hospital operations that they wished. Many opportunities to learn. A low-stress work environment with very understanding and reasonable staff.

What I wish was different

I understand the unpaid intern situation, it's a non-profit wildlife refuge, but being paid would make this position an absolutely perfect situation.

Advice

Lean into the job and don't be afraid to handle the animals. You're going to get bit by something anyway, it's easier to just relax and enjoy the interactions with native wildlife. Study the Telephone protocols and Volunteer Manual, it makes you feel more confident in your first few days.

Wildlife Hospital Intern

May - August 2021 • Medford, NJ

What I liked

I loved the learning environment provided by Woodford Cedar Run. The constant positive, constructive, and encouraging learning environment was awesome! The animals that come in are beyond amazing and the love and care provided for them by everyone makes it that much better.

What I wish was different

I wish I knew more about the day to day life as an intern before getting to my first day. It all seemed so overwhelming at first, so a heads up was all that was needed!

Advice

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! Get messy, work hard, and enjoy your summer surrounded by furry friends! Enjoy the end of your internship where you get to release the animals that you yourself have rehabilitated!
