Production Assistant

August - September 2019 • New Orleans, LA

What I liked

I enjoyed my first experience working on a feature film set. The shifts were long but they were always full of lively people and plenty of work. I felt that I was a positive force on the team and helped my film crew with whatever they needed. I also worked as a Costume Assistant, so I was hands-on with plenty of the wardrobe the cast got to wear. There were plenty of friendly people to mingle with and always great snacks at craft services.

What I wish was different

I struggled to get to work sometimes, mostly because I don't have a car, so biking to my location was difficult. The hours of the shoots were also unpredictable and sometimes would go super late at night and into the early hours of the morning. The lack of payment also made it difficult to dedicate so many hours to the project.

Advice

Be readily available for any task you are given. Production Assistants are often multi-departmental and are called upon by any random department to take on whatever task will help them. I was lucky to work primarily in the Costume Department, but when I was not helping there, I actively looked for ways to help others.
