WSP USA/Canada

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

A large part of the internship was focused on teaching me how an engineering firm operates and how its members communicate with each other and other groups. Being one of my first actual engineering internship experiences, this was very helpful in gaining a better understanding of what engineering is.

What I wish was different

The internship was virtual, and I didn't actually get to go into the office. But given the circumstances, the internship was still of excellent quality.

Advice

Be sure to dedicate a lot of time to educating yourself on relevant material. Having a decent knowledge of related content helps make the experience more effective.

Engineering Intern

June 2017 - August 2018 • Briarcliff Manor, NY

What I liked

Asking questions was extremely welcome. They knew and understood that I did not have a lot of the knowledge of their day to day work and they did not mind taking time to explain or help me when needed. I felt very comfortable asking questions about my work and also about other work/projects that were going on.

MIT Enigneering Intern

May - August 2017 • Houston, TX

What I liked

Plenty of opportunities to see job sites, work with professionals, work projects, and go to events.

What I wish was different

More projects for me personally.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask everyone if they need help with the projects. That's where the most experience comes from.

Rail Design Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Big intern program, so lots of young people to talk too. Great learning experience. Felt like a real employee doing real design work, not just silly intern paperwork.

What I wish was different

They didn’t provide housing so that would have been nice.

Advice

I highly recommend!

Environmental and Planning Intern

May - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I loved the consulting experience I gained from working with a massive corporation and the connections I made while there. I worked on various projects with people from multiple departments and learned a lot of technical skills to apply elsewhere.

What I wish was different

I wish my position had been more environmental, as it was advertised.

Advice

I would say really do intensive research on a company before joining, not just to be prepared for an interview, but to be prepared for your workload. This being said, you will never be fully prepared for what you will walk into on the first real day on the job.

Civil Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

All the people were really nice, and I learned how to use Microstation, do calculations, and a bunch of other useful stuff.

What I wish was different

I didn't like that I spent a lot of time with nothing to work on. It also would have been nice if I hadn't been the only intern.

Structural Engineer Intern

May - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

WSP is an industry leading firm that works on many high profile projects. A great part of the internship was that I was placed on to a team with a Senior VP leader. Here I assisted engineers with projects and got to be very hands on in the day to day design and operations of the firm.

What I wish was different

The internship program was limited to weekly seminar type meeting, while very informative, there could have been more done to bring the interns together more and see other aspects of the company that they weren't directly involved with.

Advice

As a future intern do not limit yourself to just the work your group does. There are many industries and disciplines WSP has and it would be very beneficial to get a taste for the other groups in the office. Everyone is very friendly and helpful, so reach out and meet people outside your group to learn more about what they do.

Love that I got to learn a lot from this job. You're working out in the field on on-going projects and under a senior inspector(s).

What I wish was different

More events for interns.

Advice

Ask questions and strike up conversations with the contractors and your fellow inspectors.
