Business Development and Operations Intern

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work with a lot of different departments throughout the summer, because the company was smaller. I also got to take ownership of a lot of my work, and provide meaningful contributions to the team. I also got to work on several different projects throughout the course of the summer, which was interesting and helped me build different skills.

What I wish was different

I wish the company had more infrastructure in place and better utilized resources. A lot of the tasks interned are assigned require a lot of research, but many research resources aren't accessible (subscription based), so we spent a lot of time making free trials and going through pages of Google trying to find any information we could. Many projects would have been much more efficient and effective for the company, given the proper resources.

Advice

Take every project you're given in stride and view it as an opportunity to learn something new, whether its about a new aspect of the company or a new business skill. There are lots of opportunities at X-Mode to jump on projects, so be vocal about things you're interested in.

What I liked

It was really gratifying to work for a company where the interns could do real and impactful work. I got to see my work published and used, and my boss was always willing to hear ideas from me and the other interns. Because the company is on the smaller side, we got to work directly with the chief officers who had a ton of insight to give.

What I wish was different

The company is relatively young, and even though it's certainly growing quickly, I could tel how young it was sometimes. Some infrastructures aren't fully in place yet, which could make things feel a but chaotic at times.

Advice

If you want to get your foot in the door in tech, I think a startup is the way to do it. If you're thinking about applying to X-Mode, it's totally worth it!
