YMCA University Y Student Center

Membership Services

September 2017 • Tacoma, WA

What I liked

I love being involved on campus with this job, I always am interacting with students that come through campus it could be active students are visitors. Also getting to know the Y members that are not students and being able to connect with them and get to know them. I am a people person so this job is amazing for me in being able to meet new people and create that connection with not only the members but the staff of the Y as well. Working there for 2 years I have gotten close to some of my co workers that have been working there around the same amount of time as me.

What I wish was different

Trying to get more involved from the beginning however it takes time to learn everything and make those connections with people. But overtime you gain the experience and now I love what I do!

Advice

Be open minded about learning new things. You have to be confident to be able to speak top people coming in and do not be afraid to ask questions because I even do not know the answer all the time even after working there for over 2 years. Always smile and welcome everyone that comes in asking how their day is because with any customer service job you never know what someone is going through so even just a smile or showing interest can make their whole day or even week!

What I liked

The attitude and atmosphere of that gym is contagious. You get to interact with people from all walks of life. It's an extremely welcoming community and everyone wants to help everyone else. The staff is outstanding and the facility is amazing. Any new face that arrives is met with respect and encouragement.

What I wish was different

There were more opportunities to get involved with not only the community but the programs that location had to offer. I took summer classes so I was able to volunteer or contribute as much as I had originally anticipated but overall it was an awesome time.

Advice

Be open to new experiences. Go outside your comfort zone and try new things. Personally I tried to exercise with many different people in order to learn as much as I could about how they run their workouts in order to form my own routine and it was very tough but also very gratifying. Do the stuff you do not enjoy because those help you grow the most whether it's mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, and or psychological.

Marketing and Communications Intern

What I liked

I loved the flexibility and ability to choose my projects I worked on and at my own pace.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of a variety of options to learn all the time instead of something different every once in a while.

Advice

Always ask questions and be sure you know how to complete something independently. It may look easy when you're being shown, but make sure to try it on your own.
