Youngstown State University

Undergraduate Research Assistant

August 2019 • Youngstown, OH

What I liked

I love the opportunity to research concrete and study it at the microscopic level. Also, the feeling that my research would bring significant change in Highway pavement design in the future is a big morale booster.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have started working on it much earlier.

Advice

I will say that if you want to get experience your university always have sufficient resources to provide them. Never back out of any opportunities. I started working on this research project as a volunteering activity later professor in charge hired me for my dedication on the research.

Front Desk Manager

May 2021 • Youngstown, OH

What I liked

I have worked at a lower level of this position for nearly 2 years, but it was nice to have the official manager duties as well now. Things such as printing time cards, managing the schedules of employees, etc etc.

What I wish was different

I do wish we had more people working to ensure someone was at the desk at all times, as only one person makes it hard since we have to leave occasionally to complete the jobs.

Advice

Taking the leap for a higher position is worth it! Learning new tasks is a great experience.

Student assistant

August 2017 • Youngstown, OH

What I liked

Staying aware of upcoming events and cool additions to YSU for future semesters. Creating a network with faculty members and being offered opportunities that otherwise wouldn't have been offered to me. Also, getting to see the inner workings of several departments and how much work it takes to serve the students year-round.

What I wish was different

More hours! As students, we need those hours, but it really depends on other student employee schedules and how it all fits in with the big picture! However, it still provides a stable income for anyone who needs some extra cash!

Advice

Take advantage of the free time you have! Get some studying done or make good use of your time in some way.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - June 2018 • Youngstown, OH

What I liked

Due to my advisor giving me only the smallest bits of information when I needed help really forced me to think independently and get creative in solving issues. This was probably my favorite part, as it forced me to learn such a vast amount of information, but more importantly, I gained a unique way of thinking about problems I encounter.
