What I liked

I love my job at Zara Tutoring. Tom is an extremely kind, caring, and responsible boss who caters towards his employees needs and schedules. He will step in and handle any issues at any time of the day. I also very much appreciate that the workload is whatever you would like it to be, meaning you can choose the days and hours you would like to work. The students and their families are always very respectful and appreciative as well. My time so far at Zara Tutoring has been nothing short of the most ideal college student job!

Advice

Really get to know the students you are working with to ensure comfortability. With this strong foundation, the student will feel more comfortable asking questions or asking for help with specific material. Ultimately, this will optimize the learning experience for the student and create a more friendly environment. I also love using the resources provided by Tom to supplement the material the students receive from their class. This provides students extra practice and can give you a better understanding of where the student is at with the material. These resources are also of great use for the acceleration approach Tom preaches. You have the ability to expose students to new material before they see it in class, which will induce more confidence and a better understanding of the material.

What I liked

I highly recommend working at Zara Tutoring. The work is fulfilling, impactful, and greatly appreciated both by the students you’re working with and by the owner, Tom. Everything is well organized, from the scheduling to the feedback and communication. Zara Tutoring has all the benefits of being a small business, without any of the drawbacks: there’s no unnecessary bureaucracy, the hours are flexible, the coworkers (and Tom) are welcoming and always there for guidance and advice, and —unlike other small businesses— there’s no drift in scope, it’s stable work, and everything runs smoothly.

Advice

Use the resources available about the classes to their fullest potential. When teaching a subject, if possible, try to be comfortable not only with that section, but also the following section(s). Then, not only can you teach ahead if need be, but you can better tailor the current explanations to allow for a smoother transition and better understanding for the student.

What I liked

Working at Zara Tutoring has been by far the most rewarding job I have had. I feel valued, appreciated, and heard. Tom truly wants his students and his employees to succeed. I never question where my employment with the company stands, since Tom frequently shares his feedback and his future plans for my position. His communication style is impeccable, and he is always available if I am having trouble or need advice. I love being able to use my degree in Secondary Education in a way that I did not even know was possible. Working with students one-on-one has allowed me to get to know my students on a elevated level that makes it apparent whenever they need more clarification on a topic. I also have the privilege of leading SAT/ACT groups. Through the groups, I am in front of the classroom and teach to more students the value of test strategies and practice. Tom provides ample resources to help guide the one-on-one sessions. This makes my sessions a breeze because I know exactly where to go to provide additional problems for my students. He also provides work-out-solutions so that if there is ever anything I forget, I can use it a resource to refresh my memory. I also appreciate Tom's willingness to work with my schedule. The hours are perfect for me and allow me to still have my weekends and holidays off (like I would if I were a teacher in a school). In addition, if I give him advanced notice, he is more than willing to make reasonable adjustments for time off.

Advice

It's okay if you don't know every equation when starting out with Zara Tutoring. It took me a bit to be able to jump back and forth between different math topics. I would just tell a student I would look into it and get back to them. They were more than okay with this because it showed them that sometime even I struggle, which I think reassured them.
