“I like having the opportunity to make someone's day just a little better, even if all it is is giving a sick child a sticker at the end of the day. It's better than nothing at all. ”

Nursing Unit Volunteer, Opthalmic Shadowee

May 2019 - August 2019 Albany, NY
“I loved volunteering in the nursing units at Albany Med because the patients were so excited and happy to meet us. I liked spending time helping patients find a book they liked to read or solve some puzzles. It was nice to see the happiness on their faces when they spent time with the volunteers. It was also really cool to learn how a hospital worked and meet some of the students there. My favorite part about shadowing was understanding how the doctor's tests and images corresponded to the diagnosis he made, and how he planned treatment for the patients post-diagnosis. It was also really cool to watch eye surgery, and see how happy patients were when they came out of surgery and noticed their improved eyesight for the first time. ”
