Patient Care Associate

June 2023 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I am on the Pre-Med track and this was a great way to get acquainted with nurses, anesthesiologists, doctors, and more. As a PCA, it was my job to give the utmost care to patients. Part of my job was to take patients' vitals, change patients, help them with personal needs, document patient data, and more. It was nice to get the hands-on experience with the patients and nurses, and something I am definitely looking forward to in my career.

Medical Administrative Assistant

What I liked

I like having the opportunity to make someone's day just a little better, even if all it is is giving a sick child a sticker at the end of the day. It's better than nothing at all.

Nursing Unit Volunteer, Opthalmic Shadowee

May - August 2019 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I loved volunteering in the nursing units at Albany Med because the patients were so excited and happy to meet us. I liked spending time helping patients find a book they liked to read or solve some puzzles. It was nice to see the happiness on their faces when they spent time with the volunteers. It was also really cool to learn how a hospital worked and meet some of the students there. My favorite part about shadowing was understanding how the doctor's tests and images corresponded to the diagnosis he made, and how he planned treatment for the patients post-diagnosis. It was also really cool to watch eye surgery, and see how happy patients were when they came out of surgery and noticed their improved eyesight for the first time.

What I wish was different

I spent about 4 days a week shadowing and volunteering. I wish I could have spent more days there!

Advice

If you are contemplating shadowing or volunteering at a hospital, you should definitely go for it. Not only will you gain valuable insight about your future career choice, but you will also learn a lot about other hospital and health care careers you may be interested in and gain real-life experience in those areas. Spending my time there really helped me build a network, where I was able to meet a lot of the healthcare staff, and the work was really rewarding.

Advice

Look for jobs early, have a strong resume, and be punctual on calling back or interviews. I takes 120 seconds to make a first impression, so make the most out of them.
