Allied Universal

Communicatons Intern

November 2023 - March 2024 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

My internship felt like an extension of my learning journey, but one that intrinsically tied what I had learned in college and applied it to real world communications scenarios - something that is very hard to imitate in college, particularly in a corporate setting. There were many opportunities that were presented to me during my time interning with Allied Universal, that allowed me to contribute both to the growth of my team and the company. The encouragement I received from my mentors and leaders made me want to work hard, helped me think outside the box, and allowed me to propose new ideas. This ultimately helped me grow from my position as an intern within the company to a full-time employee.

What I wish was different

As I received my internship outside of the regular summer internship program, I wasn't privy to networking events or intern bonding experiences due to being one of three interns at the time. Although, I do believe taking an internship outside of the regular summer schedule worked out for me in long run, the events set for summer interns are really cool!

Advice

Don't be afraid to pivot on ideas or propose new ones where you see fit. The more you lean into the experience the better. There are so many brilliant and bright minds within the company. Learn from everyone, including those outside your direct team.

Corporate Intern

December 2023 - March 2024 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

The culture in the office. Everyone was ready to help regardless of their title.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have seen an organizational chart and explained which each department does. I was working next to people in the office and I had no idea what they were doing.

Advice

Your mentor has a lot on their plate already. When you complete a task, reach out to see what else you can do rather than waiting for them to give you an assignment.

Security Guard Supervisor

June 2017 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed working at a wide variety of concerts and social events as a security guard supervisor. As a team with my fellow guards we ensured that people were safe and respected.

What I wish was different

I wish that event security guards were given stricter requirements as far as conduct and work ethic. Many security guards that were hired did not have the proper experience for certain jobs

Advice

To ensure that an event is safe team members must be respected by their supervisor and cared for so that they in turn will feel comfortable and enthusiastic about keeping the public safe

What I liked

Very low workload

What I wish was different

Pay was too low for commute and security clearance requirements. Pay is 15 an hour but you need a perfect record and its a long drive. Schedule flexibility is nonexistent. Constant pressure to pull more hours and low effort to hire new people by management.

Advice

Work this job to get your security clearance then move on.
