Amazon

Software Development Engineer Intern

May - July 2021 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Good intro to working in big tech - all technology was completely state-of-the-art. Cool dog-friendly offices. Vibrant intern community that made it a fun and social experience despite the work from home policy and Seattle being locked down. Plus working for a well established company like Amazon has given me a boost in following recruitment cycles

What I wish was different

Team was overworked so mentors were always busy and gave very little help, so there were a lot of times where I got stuck on some internal Amazon red tape problem and was unable to get help. People also clearly don't really like working there and it has an impact on the office vibe.

Advice

If your team seems busy, get ready to do everything yourself

Area Manager Intern

May - July 2021 • Coppell, TX

What I liked

I was given a lot of responsibility as an intern and given the opportunity to immerse myself into an environment of learning.

What I wish was different

The training process was unorganized, and the exceptions for the interns was also unclear within the facility and varied between managers. It seemed that a lot of communication from OpsInterns was not being translated in the expectations from managers.

Advice

Build connections with as many different people as you can. They will be able to help you a lot on your project.

Area Manager Intern

May - July 2021 • Lewisville, TX

What I liked

I liked how I got to learn about operations and further my knowledge in supply chain. I was also given a lot of responsibility and autonomy, which was great because I got to make actual change within the delivery station.

What I wish was different

This shift schedule was pretty brutal (I worked 12:30 am to 10:30am), but that's just kind of the nature of Amazon operations.

Advice

Placements take a while to come out after you get hired, so be ready to wait a while. Also be prepared to work the night shift.

The pay, the independence while on the job, coworkers

What I wish was different

more flexible hours that could have allowed me to continue working at amazon when i returned to school for the fall semester

Area manager intern

May - July 2021 • Beaumont, CA

What I liked

The challenges I was faced with. Everyday brought a new barrier I had to over come and made me learn a lot from these experiences. I also enjoyed my managers and they were extremely helpful and showed me a lot.

What I wish was different

Some days were very unorganized. I worked at a new fulfillment center that was still getting broken into. This made some days challenging but I over came this through asking questions and being resilient even when things didn't go my way.

Advice

I would highly recommend applying to jobs out of your comfort zone. I was nervous for the job being a manager in a completely different state but ended up being the best experience of my life.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Great location, nice offices (though there were no snacks), manager was pretty chill

What I wish was different

I would have preferred to work with my team in-person more. Also, my team was not at all diverse (in my team of 10, there was no STEM minority representation).

Advice

Reach out to team members early and often.

Jr. Developer

June 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

The learning experience and all the full time devs that you work with have been super helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more open to help in the beginning. Initially I've just tried to do too much by myself without asking for help, which is different now but I wish I'd started that sooner

Advice

Get ready to learn! There's so many new things introduced that it might feel overwhelming but don't be afraid to reach out to other devs to help.
