Flight Safety and Risk Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

First of all, I liked experiencing life in a new state. It was a very nice change of scenery and on top of that I was now working for a prestigious airline company. The culture was nice in that my coworkers and managers were all very friendly and seemed to really care for one another as a family. It was also amazing to learn the business and get a sneak peek of how life in the aviation safety industry can be.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work closer to my teammates, because my desk was located in a different area of the building from my team. I think it would have created better bonds with my teammates from this summer and I would have been able to retain more of the systemic procedures being able to shadow more individuals that offer different ideas and efforts to the system.

Advice

I encourage travel and allowing new experiences to come to you. If it sounds like a challenge that may also be fun just go for it! Being able to see the world makes a career choice more exciting than sticking to the same routine and schedule. Gain experience on each coast of the U.S. and in between, then branch out even further if the opportunity arises. Its amazing how much there is out there to see.

Component Engineering Co-Op

June 2018 • Tulsa, OK

What I liked

I liked the different types of work I got to experience while at American Airlines. I got to see both the business side of the company and the repair side. It was very interesting to learn about the different parts of the plane and how it all fits together. It was also very useful to see all the rules and regulations behind the scenes too. Seeing some of the reasons why these rules and maintenance procedures are in place also gave me a sense of pride in my work and made me feel as though I was helping to keep our passengers safe.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten more hands on with the parts in the shops or with the planes in general. This Co-Op was a lot of paperwork and research, so I think it would have been neat to see where these pieces go on the plane and how they interact with all the others.

Advice

Learn as much as you can while you are there. I am so glad I dug deeper to see what each individual part does in not only my group but in others too.

Manual QA Tester

December 2017 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I was working on an actual project over-seeing the whole software development process for a scheduling tool that would be the first in the airline industry to automate the way they do things.

What I wish was different

The initial pay and opportunity to be flexible (you are sitting at a desk waiting for work), but there is no complaint when you understand how to do things when you get work!

Advice

I would recommend that you make the most out of your stay whether it be an internship or full-time job role, because what matters is the quality of work you put in for the business, and they will remember you for that, and hopefully raise you to better places!
