AMPEL BioSolutions

Clinical Operations Intern

May - August 2023 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

The other interns as well as the individuals within the company were incredibly nice and welcoming. They were very flexible regarding requests to work remote and for time-off.

What I wish was different

In my offer letter which I signed and interpreted as binding, I was listed as an employee and referred to as an employee throughout my time at AMPEL multiple times. However, once tax season came around I became aware that the company listed me as an independent contractor, that I had owned my own business, and that I would be responsible for paying ~$1000 in taxes that should have been paid by AMPEL, had they filed appropriately. I reached out to AMPEL to see if this was done in error, but was told I had always been an independent contractor. Had I been notified of this prior to the start of my internship, I could have taken into consideration the amount I would have had to pay. Additionally, I had been promised a lot of opportunities during the interview process, but my days working there instead consisted of answering emails and asking for any kind of additional work to keep myself busy with. I would've enjoyed a lot more opportunities to learn and display my skill set.

Advice

While the majority of people at AMPEL couldn't have been nicer, take into serious account the kind of company that incorrectly files an intern as an independent contractor to save themselves money, and cost the intern.

Systems Immunology and Bioinformatics Intern

June 2019 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

This is an incredible opportunity to work alongside Senior Scientists to conduct meaningful research. Particularly, I enjoyed being assigned my own project which can have a significant impact on lupus genetic research. Oftentimes, I was glad to feel more like a colleague rather than an intern. The quality of people I had the opportunity to work with at AMPEL was easily one of the highlights of my internship. I would absolutely recommend this internship to other students especially those interested in biology/BME.
